Forests, Food and Land: Why Fashion Should Be Listening

Climate conversations often center on energy and transport, yet a growing body of advocacy argues that forests, food systems and land use deserve equal attention. Together these sectors account for a substantial share of global emissions, and they also hold some of the most practical solutions: protecting standing forests, restoring degraded land and changing how food and fiber are grown. For anyone who follows fashion, this is not a distant policy debate. Much of what we wear begins in a field or a forest.

Where clothing meets the land

Cotton, linen and hemp are crops that depend on soil health and water. Leather and wool are tied to livestock farming and grazing land. Viscose, modal and lyocell are made from wood pulp, which links many everyday garments directly to forestry. When advocates call for protecting forests and securing land rights, they are describing the same supply chains that feed runway collections and high-street racks alike.

What responsible sourcing looks like

  • Traceable cellulose fibers: Many brands now publish whether their wood-based fabrics come from certified or responsibly managed forests.
  • Regenerative agriculture: Some labels are experimenting with farming practices aimed at rebuilding soil and supporting biodiversity in cotton and wool production.
  • Respect for land rights: Secure tenure for Indigenous peoples and local communities is widely recognized as one of the most effective ways to keep forests standing.

Reading the label with fresh eyes

As a reader, you can ask simple questions: what is this fiber made from, where was it grown, and does the brand explain its sourcing? Designers increasingly answer these questions in their show notes and collection statements, and we track that shift across our designer spotlights and trend coverage. The link between climate summits and the clothes on our backs is closer than it looks, and paying attention to forests, food and land is one of the most grounded ways fashion can take part in that conversation.
