Going Further: Fabrics, Care and Reading the Label

Good intentions only go so far if you can't tell a genuinely responsible garment from clever marketing. A few practical habits make the difference, and most of them start with the tag inside the seam.

Know your fibers

Fiber choice shapes a garment's footprint long before it reaches a rack. Conventional cotton is thirsty and often pesticide-heavy, so organic or recycled cotton is usually a better pick. Linen and hemp grow with relatively little water and soften beautifully with wear. Lyocell made in closed-loop systems recovers most of its processing solvents. Polyester and nylon are durable but shed microfibers in the wash, and they come from fossil fuels. Recycled versions help, but they don't solve the shedding. Blends are harder to recycle at the end of a garment's life, so single-fiber pieces are often the smarter long-term buy.

Look past the buzzwords

Words like "eco," "green" and "conscious" have no fixed meaning. Look for independent certifications instead. GOTS covers organic textiles, OEKO-TEX tests for harmful substances, and Fair Trade certification addresses labor conditions. Brands that publish their factory lists or supply-chain details give you something concrete to judge, and vague promises do not.

Care is part of sustainability

Much of a garment's environmental impact happens after you buy it. A few habits stretch its life:

  • Wash less often and in cold water.
  • Air-dry instead of tumble-drying.
  • Use a microfiber-catching wash bag for synthetics.
  • Learn basic mending, like reattaching buttons, fixing hems and darning small holes.

In Los Angeles, local tailors and cobblers can rescue pieces you might otherwise throw away.

Borrow style from the runway, not the cycle
