How to Judge Whether a Brand Is Truly Size-Inclusive
Plenty of labels now advertise extended sizing, but the label on the hangtag tells only part of the story. Before you commit to a new favourite, it helps to look a little closer at how a brand actually designs, fits and sells its clothes. The difference between a collection made for a range of bodies and one that has simply been scaled up is usually visible once you know where to look.
Look at how the clothes are graded
Grading is the process of scaling a pattern from one size to the next. When a brand simply enlarges a straight-size sample, proportions often drift: armholes gape, shoulders slide and hems sit at awkward points. Brands that take inclusivity seriously tend to fit their garments on models across the size range, not just on one sample size. Product pages that mention fit testing on multiple bodies, or that show the same piece on several models, are a good sign.
Check whether the full range is really available
- Same styles, same price: Inclusive collections offer the same designs in every size, rather than a separate, smaller selection of basics for larger sizes.
- In-store and online: Some labels list extended sizes only on their websites. If you like to try things on, find out whether local stores carry the full run.
- Detailed size charts: Look for bust, waist, hip, inseam and garment measurements, not only letter sizes, so you can compare against clothes you already own.
Shop with fit in mind
Measure yourself and keep a note of the measurements of a few pieces that fit you well; it makes online shopping far less of a gamble. Pay attention to fabric content, since stretch fibres, drape and weight change how a garment behaves. Customer photos and fit comments can be more useful than polished campaign images, and a clear, fair returns policy matters when you are trying a brand for the first time.
Inclusivity on and off the runway
Size diversity has become a more visible conversation at fashion weeks, with more designers casting models across a wider range of sizes. Watching who walks in a show is one quick way to see whether a label's values extend beyond its marketing.
